Are Instant Message Programs Still Relevant?

With the explosion of social media as an every day facet of peoples lives it seems as if there is room for little else when it comes to us communication with each other online. This leaves many people questioning the remaining life span and usefulness of older methods of reaching each other through the internet. One of the methods that many people are starting to wonder about are instant messaging programs. Once the primary means for people to reach each other and chat online, they now seem to have taken a back burner position to newer technologies.

While they will likely never enjoy the same spotlight they once had, I think there is still a place for them in this changing world. The main reason for that is the lack of privacy with social media. To talk to someone in a social media environment, the other person has to be on a friends list for the world to see. While there are private messaging options, most conversations are highly public. Instant messengers still provide us with an environment to talk to each other that we don’t have to put on display to the world. We can retain that feeling of just being two friends chatting in a room with no one listening in.
